Well, you’ve heard of rooftop gardens and probably even a rooftop bar but have you ever come across a real rooftop farm? You don’t have to worry about flying pigs about town but Manchester city centre is about to get a lot more chic-k.
The Printworks are proud to announce their latest green credentials, by unveiling the freshest team members – Roost Top!
No, JAM haven’t gone completely cuckoo, but six farm chickens are now happily clucking on The Printworks roof. We went to witness the little chickens big move to their brand new home with quite the spl-hen-did view.
Friends of the Earth unveiled the project along with the extension of an already flourishing bee meadow to attract more bees to the popular project Bez’s Bees – an initiative designed to save the honey bee within UK cities. Yes, the chickens will share the roof, not rule the roost, and the bees were positively buzzing about it.
The chickens were brought in to expand the existing environmentally friendly rooftop space at The Printworks. Tenants at The Printworks are able to donate money in return for fresh eggs – all of which will go to charity.
Each chicken has its own sponsor – these include tenants of The Printworks; Bierkeller, Chiquito’s, and Hard Rock Café as well as the Corn Exchange Corn Exchange and local charity, Forever Manchester . So naturally, we put the birdies in bibs tailored to their sponsors and gave them a flappin’ photo-shoot…
Never mind chocolate, we encountered both Mexican and Rock star eggs equipped with mini-sombrero and mini-guitar – Easter will never be the same again.
All in all the day was an egg-cellent success; I even kept my feathers on holding a hen! Okay, I’ll stop with the puns now.
